5 Career Myths That Could Be Holding You Back (And What to Do Instead)

A student recently shared something I hear far too often:

"I don’t think I’ll apply because I don’t meet 100 percent of the requirements."

This is one of the most common career myths holding people back. The belief that we must be perfectly qualified before we even try can be paralyzing.

In truth, if you meet 60 to 70 percent of a job’s requirements, you should absolutely consider applying. Employers are often more interested in your potential, adaptability, and confidence than in a checklist of qualifications.

As a career coach, I frequently see people limit themselves because of myths like this. Let’s take a closer look at five of the most persistent ones and rethink them together.

Myth 1: Your Degree Determines Your Career

Many people assume their diploma locks them into a specific field or title. But the truth is far more liberating.

More than 80 percent of jobs do not require a specific degree. What employers often care about most are transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, and adaptability.

Career paths are rarely straight lines. They shift and grow as you do.

Insight: Study with curiosity, not fear. Your degree is a tool, not a sentence. Let it open doors, not limit them.

Myth 2: Networking Is Only for Extroverts

It is easy to believe that networking belongs to the boldest voices in the room. But that assumption misses the heart of what true networking is about.

Listening can be more powerful than speaking. A few meaningful connections are more impactful than a stack of business cards. In fact, introverts often excel at building deeper, more thoughtful relationships.

Insight: Networking is about human connection, not performance. You can be fully yourself and still thrive professionally.

Myth 3: You Should Accept the First Job Offer

That first offer can feel like a lifeline, especially when you are just starting out. But accepting quickly is not always the wisest move.

The first offer is not always the best fit. You are allowed to take time to reflect, ask questions, and explore other options. What matters most is how a role aligns with your long-term goals, your values, and the culture of the organization.

Insight: You are not just looking for a job. You are shaping a career. Choose the next step that helps you grow.

Myth 4: Only Apply If You Meet 100 Percent of the Requirements

This myth keeps talented people from applying in the first place. Many believe that unless they check every box, there is no point in trying.

But if you meet even 60 to 70 percent of a role’s criteria, you are already a contender. Many job descriptions are aspirational rather than essential. Confidence and willingness to learn can speak just as loudly as credentials.

Insight: Do not self-reject. Let them decide. Your job is to show up fully and give yourself the chance.

Myth 5: A Perfect CV Will Get You the Job

A strong CV is helpful, but it is not the final word.

Employers hire people, not papers. What often tips the scales is how well you communicate, how enthusiastic you are, and whether they can trust you to contribute meaningfully.

Insight: Your story, your presence, and your voice matter just as much as your achievements.

What Myth Has Held You Back?

Career myths tend to take root quietly. They show up in moments of self-doubt, hesitation, or unnecessary pressure. But once you see them clearly, you can begin to move through them with confidence and clarity.

If any of these myths resonate with you, know that you are not alone. More importantly, know that they are not permanent.
